| The Kalis Ilustrisimo Association
has seven directors worldwide. Here are their names: -Thomas
Dy Tang (Philippines)
-Joshua James Wood (Canada)
-Serge Gillete (France/Europe)
-Shamim Haque (UK/Ireland)
-John Chow (Australia)
-Roy Harris (United States)
The purpose of the directors is to explain and teach classical,
original Kalis Ilustrisimo without deviation. Personal innovations
must be clearly identified and delineated. The directors
are to coordinate with and update the other association
directors on all matters of relevance to Kalis Ilustrisimo.
The Kalis Ilustrisimo Association is not on a membership
drive. Neither does it encourage open enrollment of students.
The foreign or non-Filipino members were accepted and taught,
as friends, after they proved their character and sincerity.
It is an association of friends engaged in the study of
a martial fencing system called Kalis Ilustrisimo.
This site has been opened to provide information on Kalis
Ilustrisimo in light of the growing interest in it. There
is also a need to show, clearly and definitively, what the
original system is. There are various groups which claim
lineage from Kalis Ilustrisimo but have instead, for one
reason or another, presented their personal interpretations
and innovations in seminars and other forums (fora). For
this reason, seminars will be scheduled to provide those
with a serious interest a view of the Kalis Ilustrisimo
system.
The present members did not study Kalis Ilustrisimo for
the future purpose of teaching and commercializing the system.
They saw a serious, logical, practical martial fencing system
and studied it for personal use. Those who learned more
from the grand old man, Antonio "Tatang" Ilustrisimo,
were asked by friends to share their knowledge. Those who
were taught, in turn, now know enough to teach others. No
fees were charged friends and only friends were taught.
Those who want to study fro personal use must pass the
test of friendship. Those who want to study in order to
teach later on must pass a more severe test of friendship
and character.
No members have martial arts titles such as master or guro.
It is an egalitarian association. Directors are named only
for quick referencing in their respective countries.
Members address each other as "padre" or "pare"
in Filipino, which comes from "compadre" in Spanish.
It literally means common fathers to a child, a god father
who, in friendship, is also father to your child. Less presumptuous
members address the others as "manong" or "manoy"
, an abbreviation of the Spanish word "hermano",
meaning "brother", with the connotation that on
is addressing an elder . "Kuya" is used in the
same manner. "Utol", a diminutive of "kaputol",
is taken to mean "sibling" and literally means
"the other half of a piece".
From the foregoing, it is apparent how seriously the members
regard each other. As exponents of Kalis Ilustrisimo they
are equally serious in their practice, some having shed
blood using their knowledge to save themselves and their
loved ones.
